The state reported over 2,000 new COVID cases in the last week, taking the total number of infections in the state to 9,768, including 442 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The highest single-day spike in infections with 449 people testing positive for coronavirus was on June 6 - when the state reported 11 new deaths in a single day in Kolkata, Howrah, Parganas and Hoogly. The state government said that the total number of samples tested till June 9 stood at 287,900.


On May 29, West Bengal Fire Minister Sujit Bose tested positive for Coronavirus, Times Now reported. The Trinamool Congress Minister was reportedly working with the migrant workers and for the relief operations with regard to the cyclone Amphan. The health officials have started contact tracing to check the spread of the infection.

This comes after the state recorded 193 fresh COVID-19 cases and five deaths on May 27, ANI reported. Meanwhile, as many as 1,668 people recovered from the infection after 72 people were discharged from the hospital.

On May 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a stimulus package of ₹20 lakh crore to revive the economy. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee slammed it, calling it a 'big zero'. It was nothing but an 'eyewash' and full of 'misleading information,' Banerjee told IANS.

"In the name of lockdown, the Centre is trying economically cripple all the state governments. The announcement made by the Union Finance Minister was full of misleading information. It is nothing but a big zero as the states have got nothing," she said in a press conference.

On May 12, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced how the COVID-19 red zones shall be divided into three categories, adding that the zones will have partial relaxations to resume operations. "We have decided to divide all the red zones into three categories - A, B and C. There will be partial relaxations in both ‘B' and ‘C' category, while strict guidelines will be maintained in the ‘A' category," Banerjee said.

On May 5, the death toll among Covid-19 cases rose to 68 in the state, up by fresh seven cases in the last 24 hours, State Home Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay told IANS. However, BJP's Kailash Vijayvargiya also said that there are 'discrepancies and infirmities in the health bulletin dated May 4 released by the government of West Bengal.'

"Figures of total number of Covid deaths still missing. Instead, two separate columns mentioning patients who died due to Covid and patients who died due to comorbidities were given. ICMR/WHO-ICD guidelines require Covid to be mentioned as a reason for all patients, who were Covid positive and died," he said.

There has been a row over reporting of Coronavirus cases in the state. "We followed up with certain states as we were not receiving reports of cases and deaths on time from them. After this, the cases have been reported and there is a sudden spike in deaths reported in the past 24 hours," said Lav Agarwa, Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry.

There are as many as 516 containment zones in West Bengal. Of this, 318 are located in Kolkata alone.

"The new cases reported in the last 24 hours are 3,900 and new deaths are 195. It is the highest number so far," Agarwal added.
