Former President Donald Trump took a victory lap on Tuesday evening after Rep. Liz Cheney, one of his fiercest Republican critics, lost her primary election in Wyoming.

"This is a wonderful result for America," Trump said in a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Harriet Hageman, a local natural resources attorney and former Republican National Committeewoman, defeated Cheney in Wyoming's Republican primary, according to projections by Decision Desk HQ and Insider.

Trump congratulated Hageman, whom he endorsed to defeat Cheney, before moving on to sharply criticize the congresswoman.

"Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, the way she acted, and her spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions towards others," Trump said. "Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where, I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now."

Trump added that the election outcome is a "complete rebuke" of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, on which Cheney serves as vice chair.

"Thank you WYOMING!" he said.

Cheney's primary loss in Wyoming gives Trump a major victory in his quest to purge the Republican Party of those he deems disloyal to him. Cheney has been a vocal critic of Trump since the January 6 attack and voted to impeach the former president. She joins three other pro-impeachment House Republicans who recently lost their primary bids against Trump-backed challengers.

Cheney also called on the DOJ to put forth criminal charges against the former president following the January 6 riot and has called Trump "unfit for further office."

She urged Americans to join her fight against Trump in her concession speech on Tuesday evening from Jackson, Wyoming.

"Let us resolve that we will stand together — Republicans, Democrats, independents — against those who would destroy our republic," she said.
