Russia facing Uefa investigation after supporters brutally attack England fans
Russia is facing investigation by Uefa after fans charged at and attacked England supporters following the final whistle of their team's match in Marseille on Sunday.
The Russian attackers threw projectiles - including chairs and dustbins - forcing panicked England fans to clamber over barriers as stewards watched helplessly.
BBC political correspondent described the scenes on Twitter as "utter panic."
"Have never seen anything like this in football stadium. Utter panic in England as some Russians charged. Women and children trampled," he wrote.
Uefa is now examining how the team can be punished for the severe violence displayed by its fans.
The violence continued to pour out of the stadium and onto the streets, leaving 20 England fans hospitalised, including one in critical condition following a cardiac arrest, according to The Independent.
Women and children were also caught in the stampede to escape the stadium as bloodied England fans scrambled. An England fan at the match told Sky News: "There was no security... I think it speaks volumes about the way this tournament has been organised."

Uefa, the governing body of European football, has said that it "firmly condemns the incidents in Marseille."
