A surge in interest in the metaverse has led to an explosion in asset inflows for an ETF that was at the right place at the right time.

The Roundhill Ball Metaverse ETF launched on June 30 with assets of just a few million dollars. The ETF, which seeks to gain exposure to companies that are enabling a future where people spend more and more time in virtual worlds, sports the ticker symbol "META."

That ticker symbol likely aided a big boost in the ETF's assets under management beginning October 28 — the same day Facebook changed its name to Meta (with plans to switch its ticker to "MVRS").

Since then, the fund has grown its assets by 548% to $823.2 million, according to data from Koyfin. That translates to big business for the ETF's creator, Roundhill. If the ETF maintains assets of at least $823 million going forward, and considering its 0.75% expense ratio, the fund will generate more than $6 million in annual revenues.

Since October 28, the Metaverse ETF is up about 5%, meaning a bulk of its surge in assets is not coming from the appreciation of its underlying holdings, but rather from investors who are bullish on the sector and putting new money to work. In fact, from October 28 through November 24, the Metaverse ETF didn't see a single day of declining assets.
