This could be dangerous! Maneka Gandhi wants to make sex determination of foetus mandatory

In a complete U-turn on government’s efforts to check female foeticide, India’s Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi vouched for sex determination.

Addressing a conference in Jaipur, Gandhi said the Indian government was mulling over removing the two-decade-old ban on sex determination.

"A proposal is under discussion in the Cabinet to evolve a system that can easily track attempts at female foeticide (by parents) instead of punishing the fraternity involved in the medical processes," said Gandhi.

Gandhi further said that people registering the sex of the foetus will have to produce a medical certificate or cite the reason for termination of pregnancy.

"This will ensure institutional deliveries and virtually abolish the practice of home deliveries in certain areas of the country. Home deliveries pose a threat to a newborn as there might be an attempt on its life," said the minister.

Gandhi backed her suggestion by saying that many times influential people, who get sonographies done and pregnancies terminated despite the ban, end up in prisons taking nurses and doctors along with them.
