This was Paul Daniels' most famous trick

Television magician and entertainer Paul Daniels has died aged 77 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, his publicist has confirmed.

Daniels, one of the most beloved magicians of the 20th century, passed away in his Berkshire home surrounded by his family in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Born in Middlesborough, Daniels' natural charisma combined with his incredible tricks made him a household name in entertainment who performed for royalty both at home and abroad.

One of Daniels' most remembered tricks was his "Chop Cup" routine performed in 1985.

A statement from his publicist said:One of our most beloved entertainers, Paul Daniels, has passed away at the age of 77. The TV star, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year, passed away peacefully at home with Debbie at his side in the early hours of this morning. Debbie and the family would like to thank everyone for their support and asks that their privacy be respected at this sad time.The entertainer's son, Gary, confirmed the news on Twitter with a picture of a crying white rabbit in magician's black top hat.Daniels was first diagnosed with a tumor last month. It was found when the magician suddenly fell and was rushed to hospital suspected of suffering a stroke.Messages of sadness have started to pour in with stars of British entertainment including magician Dynamo and TV personality Louis Theroux expressing their condolences.The magician, who rose to fame with hugely popular TV shows on BBC and ITV, leaves behind wife Debbie McGee and three sons.Here, you can watch the whole "Chop Cup" routine:
