A 'Fallout 4' player is suing the game's developers claiming it was so addictive it cost him his job and wife
According to the RT, an unnamed 28-year-old man from Krasnoyarsk, Russia is suing Bethesda Game Studios for 500,000 rubles, or roughly $7,000, for failing to warn customers like him that "Fallout 4" could "become so addictive."
"If I knew that this game could have become so addictive, I would have become a lot more wary of it," the man said in a statement to RT. "I would not have bought it, or I would have left it until I was on holiday or until the New Year holidays."
The Russian man says he regularly skipped work to play the game, which resulted in his termination. He also said he had trouble sleeping, eating, and seeing friends, and that his wife left him as a result.
Sure, "Fallout 4" is an addictive, fun game to play. And since it's set in a massive open post-apocalyptic world, it's easy to pour dozens of hours into the game. But that doesn't mean it was Bethesda's intention to keep people from their professional and personal responsibilities. Bethesda did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
In a statement to the RT, the law firm representing the man said it wants to "see how far we can go regarding this case."
Cases like this have been won by plaintiffs in the past. One Hawaiian man named Craig Smallwood sued a South Korean game maker called NCsoft in 2010 because he said he became addicted to a game they made called "Lineage II," arguing he wouldn't have played the game if he didn't know he'd become addicted. In that case, the judge actually sided with Smallwood and ordered the Korean gaming company to pay his legal fees.
