A university's endowment is typically invested each year to increase the funds an institution has to offer financial aid, attract professors, and construct new buildings on campus. All the Ivies have endowments in the billions of dollars, with Harvard holding the largest endowment in the country, currently valued at $36.4 billion.
Here's how all of the Ivy League endowments performed in fiscal year 2014, ranked high to low:
- Yale University - 20.2% return
- Princeton University - 19.6% return
- Dartmouth College - 19.2% return
- University of Pennsylvania - 17.5% return
- Columbia University - 17.5% return
- Brown University - 16.1% return
- Cornell University - 15.8% return
- Harvard University - 15.4% return

- Harvard University - $36.4 billion
- Yale University - $23.9 billion
- Princeton University - $21.0 billion
