It seems private sector is losing its sheen amongst our supposedly high-handed bureaucrats. The government recently told the Rajya Sabha that not even a single IAS, IPS or IRS officer resigned to join private sector in the last three years.

“No IAS, IPS, IRS officer has resigned during the last three years to take up jobs in private sector. However, a number of IAS, IPS and IRS officers resigned from their respective service during the last three years on personal grounds,” said Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions while replying to a question raised in the Upper House.

According to the reply filed, in the past three years, 11 IAS officers resigned from their positions while 15 Indian Revenue Officers have quit their jobs on personal grounds. Interestingly, not even a single IPS officer left his services in the last three years.

“No prior permission is required for officers who have resigned to join other organizations. However, in terms of Rule 26 of All India Services (Death Cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, for officers who retires from service, prior permission of Government is required if they wish to accept post retirement commercial employment before the expiry of one year from the date of their retirement,” added Dr. Singh.

He also stated that the exodus of IAS and IRS officers is not a matter of concern as the number is not substantial. “Taking into account the strength of All India Services, the number of IAS, IPS and IRS officers tendering of resignation is within the normal limit as per record maintained by the respective cadre controlling authorities,” stated Dr. Singh.
