Rescue workers search for victims in the wreckage of a derailed Amtrak train in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania May 12, 2015.

The Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday night in Philadelphia may have been going more than 100 mph at the time of the crash, the Wall Street Journal reported.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, the speed limit for the sharply curved section of track known as Frankford Junction is only 50 mph.

Sources told the Journal that investigators are focusing in on excessive speed as the primary cause of the crash that killed seven people and injured more than 200.

The Amtrak train 188 was headed for New York from Washington, DC with 238 passengers and five crew onboard when it derailed at around 9:30PM Tuesday evening shortly after departing from Philadelphia's 30th Street Station.

As a result of the incident, Amtrak has suspended Northeast Corridor service between Philadelphia and New York.
