President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Friday to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Trump confirmed in a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday.

"We have a very good relationship, the president and I," Trump told reporters when asked about his rift with the Mexican president over who will pay for a border wall.

Trump added that "Mexico with the United States has out-negotiated us and beat us to a pulp with our past leaders."

The call, which lasted about an hour, came one day after Trump and Nieto canceled their planned meeting at the White House.

Mexico's readout of Trump's call with Nieto claims that the presidents "agreed at this point not to speak publicly" about the border wall.

"Both presidents acknowledged their clear and very public differences in position on this sensitive issue," the readout said," and agreed to resolve those differences as part of a comprehensive discussion of all aspects of the bilateral relationship."
