A 38-year-old interpreter was raped near the Calais Jungle on Tuesday while working on a documentary for French public broadcaster France 5, according to French newspaper Le Figaro.

The victim, of Afghan origin, was at the camp with a France 5 journalist. She is a Pashtun interpreter and they were filming unaccompanied child migrants in the camp.

The pair were reportedly accosted near the camp by three men, armed with knives, who were speaking Pashtun.

The journalist was assaulted and his filming material stolen. The interpreter was then raped at knife-point by one of the attackers, while the two others kept the journalist away. The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. local time.

The aggressors then let them leave and they went to the police station to report the crime. The rape victim was in a state of shock and hospitalised.

"The rape was confirmed by a medical practitioner who examined the victim. Genetic samples were taken to identify the rapist," said Pascal Marconville, the prosecutor of Boulogne-sur-Mer, according to Le Figaro. The three attackers are still at large.

The Calais migrant camp, known as the Jungle, is home to thousands of migrants hoping to enter the UK on the back of lorries and through the Eurochannel. The squalid camp has been a sore point between French and British politicians who keep shifting responsibility for the camp onto the other country.
