Anand Mahindra, the chief of $21-billion Mahindra Group, banned plastic bottles in his companies after a Twitter user pointed it out

• When a Twitter user pointed out the use of plastic bottles in his meeting, Twitter savvy Anand Mahindra announced he would ban them in the boardroom.
• The Mahindra chairman had also batted for action against climate change at the World Economic Forum.
• Meanwhile, Azim Premji in his last AGM at Wipro announced that the company uses 42% recycled water.

It seems like large Indian companies are taking real responsibility towards making a difference. When a Twitter user pointed out to Anand Mahindra that his boardroom meeting picture has too many plastic bottles, the Mahindra Group Chairman announced that ‘plastic bottles will be banished’ and that they were embarrassed.


Mahindra, who is very active on Twitter, has been working towards sustainable growth. The chairman of the automobile giant which also makes electric cars, spoke at the World Economic Forum about the need of business leaders coming together for the cause.

“The business community too recognises that this is not a problem they are solving alone or something you check on your CSR (corporate social responsibility) box. This is the biggest business opportunity for the next few decades,” he said.

He had also reminded the audience at WEF that on behalf of his employees of all the 100 companies from his group, had taken a pledge to become carbon neutral 10 years before the agreed deadline for the world in the Paris agreement.

Meanwhile, Azim Premji during last AGM announced that Wipro is taking a serious step towards renewable energy. “This year, we have significantly scaled up the use renewable energy for our operations, which now contributes 40 percent of our total consumption. Recycled water now contributes to 42% of our total water usage,” said Premji.
