It's official: On Thursday, Apple became the first publicly traded US company with a market capitalization over $1 trillion.

And an investor who bought in around the company's initial public offering would have made a very impressive return.

After initially offering its stock at $22 per share on December 12, 1980, Apple closed around $29 a share, or about $0.02 after adjusting for stock splits and dividends, according to data from Yahoo Finance. As of about 1:37 PM ET on Thursday, Apple was trading at about $207.42 per share, a bit above the magic number of $207.05 that sent the stock's market capitalization over $1 trillion.

The chart below shows the value over time of a $1,000 investment in Apple made at its December 12, 1980 closing price. As of Thursday afternoon, that investment would be worth about $8,914,000, which is a pretty good return.
