Former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who abruptly resigned on Monday night, reportedly suffered a bloody injury while drunk in January 2017 and blamed it on falling "while running."
At the time, Schneiderman called Tanya Selvaratnam, a former romantic partner who has now accused him of physical and mental abuse. He told her he'd been drinking the night before, fell, didn't realize how badly he'd hurt himself, went to sleep and woke up in a "pool of blood," according to a bombshell story from The New Yorker.
Schneiderman ultimately went to the hospital, where he received several stitches above his left eye. An image provided to The New Yorker reportedly showed Schneiderman with a black eye and a bandage across the left side of his forehead. As a result of his injuries, Schneiderman's team decided to cancel a public appearance and tell anyone who asked the injury was a product of falling "while running."
On Tuesday, Schneiderman announced his resignation just hours after The New Yorker released its story, which outlined horrific allegations of physical and emotional abuse from four women against the now ousted New York attorney general. According to the story, this abuse was linked to Schneiderman's apparent abuse of alcohol.
Two of the women said Schneiderman went as far as threatening to kill them if they ended their romantic relationships with him. Schneiderman denied those accusations.
"In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me," Schneiderman said in a statement released Monday evening.
"While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office's work at this critical time," Schneiderman added.
Schneiderman was a vocal advocate of the #MeToo movement and is now widely being criticized as a hypocrite.
New York Solicitor General Barbara Underwood will step in and serve as acting attorney general.
