The unprecedented downpour and flooding in Chennai that brought the city to a standstill has also forced the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras to reschedule itsplacement to early January.

The placement will now start on January 6, 2016, the institute said in a release. It was stalled after the first day on December 1.

"Companies have been informed about the interviews being postponed. All companies have been very understanding and have responded positively and assured that they will definitely come and recruit from IIT Madras despite the disruption," said V Babu, placement advisor at IIT Madras.

The first five days, till January 10, will have two sessions per day (7 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 11 pm). There will be no interviews on January 11, while January 12-14 will have one session per day (10 am to 5 5 pm), the IIT statement said.

The decision was taken in consultation with student representatives, IIT Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi and dean of students Sivakumar, besides Babu.
