Chevy just unveiled one of the most powerful Camaros ever made

Mar 16, 2016, 19:20 IST

Chevrolet

Since the unveiling of the new Camaro last year, muscle car fans everywhere have been waiting for higher performance models like the 1LE, ZL1, and Z28 models to make their way from behind the curtain as well. With the 1LE and now the ZL1 revealed, we're two thirds of the way there.

Two thirds has never looked so good.

The new Camaro ZL1, announced Wednesday, is powered by an insane 640 horsepower, supercharged V8 engine. 0-60 and top speed numbers have not yet been announced, but I will personally promise you one thing. This car will be very, very fast.

In comparison, the last ZL1 did 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and held a top speed of 180 MPH. This new Camaro uses an engine borrowed from Corvette Z06, which has a 0-60 time of 2.95 seconds and a monstrous top speed of over 200 MPH. So yeah, chances are, this thing is fast enough to scare you, and the three other people that it can fit with its 2+2 seat configuration, half to death.

The new ZL1 will be available with a choice of a six-speed manual with rev-matching or a brand new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Like most of GM's other high-performance cars, the ZL1 will have an adjustable MagneRide suspension for optimal handling. To top that, the ZL1 will also have an electric limited-slip differential, probably similar to the one used in the current generation of Corvettes, underneath the rear of the car to make the car corner even better and help the car put down its crazy amount of power in the smartest way possible.

With all this speed, aerodynamics has also been a huge thing for the new ZL1. In a press release, GM has said that during testing, the new ZL1 has spent over 100 hours in a wind-tunnel and on track just for aero engineering and testing purposes.

The interior features comfortable, yet well-bolstered Recaro sport seats and suede on the steering wheel.

No word on pricing yet, but apparently "it will compare well to any sports coupe, at any price and in any setting," according to Mark Reuss, GM's executive VP of Global Product Development.

The new ZL1 will go on sale in late 2016.
