For your passport getting delayed, failure to provide an FIR copy on same day or not releasing impounded vehicles after completion of formalities are all set to become pricier for police. Suggested by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), police would be made to pay penalty of delay in service.

The report has been prepared for delivery of services to citizens as part of a drive to promote good practices, accountability and transparency in police services

The police research body has included 45 services as 'Public Delivery Services' and suggested that on duty policeman be fined for failing to do his/her duties. These include issues like tenants and foreigners; issuance of licence; no objection certificate for a music programme; post-mortem reports; NOC for protest, apart from arrests, investigations and regular policing.

The fines, suggested by the apex police research wing, would range between Rs 250 per day of delay to Rs 5000.
These 45 public delivery services of police will also be included in a 'Citizens' Charter' of states/UTs to empower citizens and improve quality of life while also generating goodwill and community support for police.
