NEET and JEE 2020 will not be postponed, Education Secretary confirms

Joint Entrance Examination and The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2020 will not be postponed, asserts Amit Khare, Secretary, Ministry of Education after several Members of Parliament, and social influencers sought postponement of the exam fearing rise in student suicide cases.

“NEET 2020 will not be postponed. The Supreme Court has given a very clear order," Amit Khare, Secretary, HRD Ministry.

NEET 2020 is scheduled for September 13 while the JEE Mains is to be held between September 1 to September 6. Both of these exams have been postponed a number of times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.


Earlier today, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to direct the Education Ministry to postpone the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) till Diwali, and warned of suicides by youths otherwise.

In his "urgent letter" to Modi, Swamy said: "Holding the exams, in my opinion, may lead to a large number of suicides by youths around the country."


He cited an example of Mumbai where, he claimed, "there is no public transport and people have to come from other areas, often 20 to 30 km away". This is because of the restrictions enforced at many places due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he argued.

After Swamy, the National Students' Union of India on August 21 also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand their postponement, citing the danger to the lives of students amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

On August 15, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a plea seeking postponement of Joint Entrance Examination and The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2020.
