After dating for over a decade, Colombian singer Shakira and Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique announced their breakup in June 2022. They have two children together. The news about their breakup hit social media, with multiple reports surfacing on how Shakira discovered Pique’s alleged infidelity through missing jam jars at home. Shakira also released two songs Monotonía and BZRP Music Session #53 (in October 2022 and January 2023 respectively) apparently targeted at Pique and their relationship. Shakira also posted vague updates on social media- talking about betrayal and open wounds in one Instagram post, and singing along to singer SZA’s Kill Bill in another. The lyrics of Kill Bill read “I might kill my ex, not the best idea / His new girlfriend’s next, how’d I get here?” Pique, meanwhile, shared an uncaptioned post on Instagram with his new girlfriend Clara Chia Marti in January.

Amber Heard - Johnny Depp

In 2016, a year after their marriage, actor Amber Heard accused actor Johnny Depp of physical abuse and filed for divorce. Depp refuted the allegations and the case was settled out of court. The two divorced in 2017. However, when Heard wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post on domestic abuse in 2018, Depp sued her for defamation - even though she didn’t name him in the op-ed. She countersued Depp. Thus started a long, well-publicised trial that turned social media into a battleground for the fans - with people dissecting evidence shared in the court, Depp’s and Heard’s behaviour, witness testimonies, and everything else under the sun. At the end of the trial, the jury found both Heard and Depp guilty of defamation but Heard was charged to pay a greater amount in damages ($15 million) than Depp ($2 million). After the verdict was announced, Depp joined TikTok and thanked his fans for their support.

Actors Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan's alleged affair and eventual separation first surfaced online in 2016. At the time, reports suggested that Roshan backed out of Aashiqui 3 as he didn’t want to work with Ranaut. Consequently, in an interview with Pinkvilla, Ranaut commented “exes do silly things to get your attention.” Roshan responded to this with a tweet stating there were “more chances of him dating the pope”. Soon after, Roshan sent a legal notice to Kangana asking for an apology, and Ranaut responded with a counter-notice. The notices opened a Pandora’s box of emails in which Ranaut alleged regular communication with Roshan, while he maintained that she communicated with a false e-mail ID. The notices progressed to interviews on national TV channels - and support on social media. Roshan’s ex-wife Sussanne Khan and actor Farhan Akhtar came out in his support, while Roshan’s sister, surprisingly, supported Ranaut. Actors Raveena Tandon and Sonam Kapoor also came out in her support. The matter was ultimately closed in 2019 when the cyber crime cell of Mumbai Police submitted a ‘NIL’ report owing to a lack of leads.

The director of Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde, courted a fair share of drama two years after she broke up with Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis. The two parted ways in 2020, ending a seven-year-long engagement. In 2021 reports of Wilde dating singer and actor Harry Styles surfaced online. A year later, in April 2022, Wilde was served with legal papers concerning her two children with Sudeikis while she was onstage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Shortly thereafter, in October 2022, a former nanny alleged in a Daily Mail interview that Sudeikis threw himself in front of Wilde’s car - all to stop her from feeding a special salad dressing to Styles. While social media memed the allegations, Sudeikis and Wilde jointly denied them. But Wilde did share a salad dressing recipe on her Instagram story at the time, that set the rumour mills churning again. As of now, reports suggest that the two are on better terms. Wilde and Styles have also parted ways.

One of the most popular celebrity couples at one time, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West aka Ye ended their six-year-long marriage in 2021. The two have four children together. They had been dating since 2011. After filing for divorce, West’s behaviour was outrightly dangerous and toxic. He stalked Kardashian in an attempt to win her back but also took to Instagram to claim he didn’t have equal visitation rights with their children. He even constantly harassed her partner at the time, comedian Pete Davidson, threatening him with violence through songs and videos. Later, he deleted all the posts. After constantly being harassed by West, Davidson engaged in a lengthy conversation with the rapper, asking him to get help. Davidson’s friend and collaborator, Dave Sirus, shared the photos of their text exchange in a since-deleted Instagram post. As of now, Davidson and Kardashian have also parted ways, while West has been accused of racist behaviour and lost out on multiple brand deals.

After dating for over a year, singers Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris parted ways in 2016. Though it appeared to be an amicable separation in the beginning, the story changed when reports of Swift dating actor Tom Hiddleston surfaced online. Harris proceeded to delete a tweet stating he still had “love and respect” for Swift, unfollowed her on social media, blocked her followers, and deleted all the images of them together. Consequently, Swift also deleted the photos from her social media but didn’t unfollow Harris.

Actor Sushmita Sen’s affair with model Rohman Shawl was peak digital romance - it started with a direct message on Instagram (Shawl messaged Sen) and ended with an amicable post on the same social media site. Their relationship was chronicled on social media as well - with Shawl often seen spending time with not just Sen but also her family. In fact, even after the two parted ways, Shawl could be seen with Sen and her daughters. Comparatively, this was one of the most mature breakups to happen on social media.
