Modi may return as PM because Mamata Banerjee and Naveen Patnaik have ceded more seats to BJP than they wanted

• West Bengal and Odisha could be the states in which the BJP has seen a massive growth from the 2014 general elections.
• Cumulatively, the states could help BJP get 21 seats.

The exit poll results for the Indian general elections predict a clean sweep by the Bharatiya Janata Party and a big push to its probable victory has been provided by two states from India’s eastern corridor – West Bengal and Odisha.

The two east Indian states could be the states in which the BJP has seen a massive growth from the 2014 general elections.

In West Bengal, the stronghold of Trinamool Congress while the exit polls still stand in favour of the party, BJP has a surprisingly large swing. BJP which barely had 2 seats in the Indian general elections in 2014, could have 13 seats according to the poll of polls. The fallout of the Congress and CPI(M) alliance further led to the BJP and TMC command authoritative positions in the elections.


In Odisha, the BJP was in a strong fight with the regional Biju Janata Dal (BJD) – a party which has held the reigns in the state for 19 long years now. Naveen Patnaik, the incumbent Chief Minister of the state, was trying to ward off any competition from the national party BJD. The BJD had seen the exit of one its biggest party members – Baijayant Panda, who went on to join the BJP and also holds the position of its National Vice President. BJP has another leader in the state with Dharmendra Pradhan – Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.
