In a move to prop up manufacturing, the government may allow foreign-funded Indian companies to sell products online, provided they make more than three-fourths of their product range in the country.

In his budget speech, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that manufacturers would be allowed to sell goods online even if they have foreign investment, provided they manufacture their products domestically. The present foreign investment policy doesn’t permit any foreign direct investment (FDI) in eCommerce.

"We are trying to find some solution to that and help an Indian brand grow big. Those manufacturing in India should be allowed to sell online. We will need to tweak the policy suitably," said a DIPP official.

Just a day before leaving for the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the 'Make in India' campaign in the presence of CEOs and industry leaders, and pledged to create a transparent and secure environment for doing business in India.
