969 units of blood donated in Mizoram during lockdown

Aizawl, Apr 24 () Mizoram now has sufficient stockof blood bags to meet urgent requirements after 969 units ofblood were donated during the ongoing lockdown, an officialsaid here on Friday.

There was a bit of crisis during the initial stage ofthe lockdown but the situation is normal now, the officialsaid.

Following an appeal by the state government, severalorganisations and church bodies came forward to donate bloodand it was collected strictly maintaining the socialdistancing norms, he said.

Of the 30,499 units of blood collected in the stateduring 2019-20, the official said, 27,727 units were donatedvoluntarily.

State Blood Transfusion Council held a meeting onFriday and decided to spread awareness on the need fordonating blood.

Meanwhile, Mizoram Sports Minister Robert RomawiaRoyte on Friday distributed 200 sets of sewing machines totailors in his Aizawl East-II constituency so that more facemasks can be manufactured.

Royte said the demand for face masks increased afterthe Centre made it mandatory to wear face masks in public andworkplaces during the lockdown. CORNN NN
