According to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) statement, 751 patients were discharged from various city hospitals in the past 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 23,693.

The civic body said the city has 26,897 active COVID- 19 cases, while 749 new suspected coronavirus patients were admitted in hospitals here.

According to the BMC, out of the 97 deaths, 80 patients had co-morbidities (pre-existing health conditions).

Also, 20 of these deaths took place earlier, but were added to the tally on Wednesday, the civic body said.

On Wednesday, the city recorded the highest-ever 97 deaths in a single-day and also for the first time the number of COVID-19 cases crossed the 1,500-mark in a day since May 30.

The previous highest single-day fatality count was 61, recorded on June 8.

On May 30, a total of 1,510 new cases were recorded in the city and on June 9, the number of positive cases came down to 1015.

Notably, the state and city authorities have allowed reopening of markets, shops and offices with certain conditions from June 3, due to which a large number of people have been coming on the roads despite the lockdown.

Due to poor frequency of civic buses, social distancing among passengers has become a challenge while travelling.

Meanwhile, the BMC has issued an advisory for senior citizens and requested them not to panic if they test positive for COVID-19.

"As per experts, most patients with mild and moderate symptoms of the disease recover. Many with serious diseases also recover," the BMC said.

The BMC said if there are mild symptoms or no symptoms and no co-morbidity, patients can remain in home isolation, provided they have necessary facilities available at home.

It further said if a patient does not have facility for home isolation, he can be admitted in a COVID Care Centre. KK RSY RSY
