Amidst increasing globalisation, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) of India is taking cues from the western countries to ease its functions and ensure the safety of its passengers.

In a latest development, Indian airline carriers will now be carrying handcuffs with them, so that the staff can restrain unruly passengers who don’t remain bound to their seats till the landing. Several western airlines already carry restrainers in their crafts to tackle troublesome passengers.

"The DGCA's nod came in end-2015. We will have restrainers on board shortly and use them in the interest of flight safety as and when required," a Jet Airways official told TOI.

Airlines will only be using these cuffs to control the nuisance of unruly behaviour if it threatens the safety of aircraft or other passengers.
However, some airlines are already well prepared for disruptive behaviours from passengers. While SpiceJet crew is trained in martial arts, IndiGo crafts have been carrying nylon ropes for some time now.
