NGT says odd-even formula will only make Delhiites buy 2 cars

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has questioned the Delhi government's odd-even plan for vehicles. According to the NGT, it’ll only force Delhiites to buy two cars. The government however, is moving ahead with the plan.

Starting 1st January, breaking the odd-even rule could cost you Rs 2,000 or more. The Delhi government is also extending a provision of the Motor Vehicles Act that currently applies to commercial vehicles to private ones.

The legislation in question is Section 194 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The government is also looking at other sections, including Section 115, which allows the government to ‘restrict the use of vehicles’ of specified classes in certain areas or roads in the interest of ‘public safety’ and ‘convenience’.

In case you don’t know, the Delhi government wants to restrict private cars between 8 am and 8 pm, Monday to Saturday as a measure to curb pollution. Odd-numbered cars will run on odd dates and those with even numbers on even dates.
