One of these four people will replace Yanis Varoufakis

Greece's finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was extremely popular with the Greek nation but not with the country's creditors - that is why he shockingly resigned on Monday.

Greece's former finance minister wrote on his blog:

I was made aware of a certain preference by some Eurogroup participants, and assorted 'partners', for my… 'absence' from its meetings; an idea that the Prime Minister judged to be potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement. For this reason I am leaving the Ministry of Finance today.

I consider it my duty to help Alexis Tsipras exploit, as he sees fit, the capital that the Greek people granted us through yesterday's referendum.

And I shall wear the creditors' loathing with pride.

So now all eyes turn towards who the anti-austerity Syriza-led government is going to appoint in Varoufakis' place. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is set to announcement his replacement early today.

Here are the four likely candidates although Tsipras could surprise us all and pick someone else.

Yannis Dragasakis

Greece's deputy prime minister Yannis Dragasakis is an economist and former Marxist.

Unlike Varoufakis, he keeps a relatively low profile and remains behind the scenes when it comes to overseeing Greece's economy policies.

However, he has increasingly voiced "displeasure" over Varoufakis' tactics at the negotiation table with creditors.

Giorgos Stathakis

Giorgos Stathakis is currently the minister of Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism in the government of Alexis Tsipras.

He was also a professor of political economy at the University of Crete.

Euclid Tsakalotos

Euclid Tsakalotos is the Greek deputy foreign minister and is an Oxford-educated economist. He has a senior role in the government to coordinate negotiations between the country and its creditors. He is also the market's favourite to replace Varoufakis.

George Chouliarakis

George Chouliarakis heads the Greek government's negotiating team. He is also a lecturer at Britain's Manchester University. He is apparently popular with the creditors over his moderate views.
