Seelampur state assembly seat occurs within the portals of the South West Delhi parliamentary district. The Seelampur assembly constituency has a total number of 1,55,735 voters including 85,350 males, and 70,385 females. Delhi assembly has 70 Vidhan Sabha seats in total. The present government’s five year ruling term will end on 22 February 2020. Hence all the 70 seats will go for polls during the general elections for the Delhi assembly announced by the election commission to be held in February 2020. These elections will decide the candidates who will go to the Delhi Vidhan Sabha from all these constituencies to form the new government that will rule for the next five year term.

In 2015 general elections for the Delhi assembly, Seelampur constituency’s winner was Mohd. Ishraque of AAP. His vote score was 57302. He defeated the BJP candidate Sanjay Jain who got 29415 votes. From 1993, this constituency has seen 6 assembly elections. In all these elections, Chaudhary Matin Ahmed had won the seat and became the MLA of the Seelampur seat five times in a row. In all the elections, BJP was the runner up. Mateen Ahmed represented JD in 1993, IND in 1998 and INC in three elections held in 2003, 2008 and 2013. BJP is yet to open its innings in this constituency.

Seelampur is a general seat open for all contestants. The vote score of 57302 scored by the AAP contestant Mohd. Ishraque in 2015 elections was the highest any candidate could score from this assembly constituency.
