Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks on 70th Constitution Day to mark the adoption of the constitution of India — which came into effect on January 26, 1950.

Four years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the Ambedkar memorial in Mumbai on November 19, 2015 — marking November 26 — the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar — as the Constitution Day of India.

Here are the key points from Narendra Modi’s speech:

  • While addressing the joint sitting, Modi paid tribute to the martyrs of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
  • He also said that the country will remember all the constitutional pillars laid by Ambedkar saying that ‘constitution is India’s sacred book.’
  • He recalled that Indians never stopped believing in the constitution and this is what binds all of us.
  • We should never forget Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings. He added that Gandhi taught us to perform our duties towards the nation. “If I am following traffic rules, that also means that I am doing my duty,” he said.
