IN PICS: Devastating images of floods wreaking havoc in Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Assam

  • In Karnataka, a 'red alert' has been issued for five districts — Shivamogga, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada — for August 9
  • In Kerala, the death toll in the massive landslide — which occurred on Friday and flattened a row of 20 houses of tea estate workers in the high range Idukki district — rose to 27.
  • In Bihar, 73 lakh people have been affected by floods.
Several parts of India — Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam are battling floods amidst this coronavirus pandemic. Incessant heavy rains lashed parts of South India on Friday, triggering a massive landslide in Kerala that killed over 20. It has also caused water levels in most rivers in neighbouring Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to surge, prompting authorities to ask people to move to safer places.

This grim situation adds to India's misery as it comes at a time when the country is battling the COVID-19 crisis. India has added over 64,000 COVID-19 cases (the biggest one-day spike), and 861 deaths in the last 24 hours.
