The global fatality rate for COVID-19 has more than doubled since the early days of the outbreak.

However, the rate varies widely by country — Italy, Iran, and Spain have been hit particularly hard due to factors such as aging populations and slower efforts to contain the virus.

Older age groups are the most at risk: The death rate in the US is above 10% for those over 85, while it's less than 0.1% for those under 45.
However, the fatality rate does not show that 20-44 year-olds represent one of the largest age groups affected by COVID-19: about 20% of all hospitalizations, at least in the US.
