Four of the top-10 most valued firms together added Rs 2.18 lakh crore in market valuation last week, with Life Insurance Corporation and State Bank of India emerging as the biggest gainers.

The Sensex and the Nifty rebounded in early trade on Friday amid buying in Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services and ICICI Bank along with largely firm Asian markets. ​Bharti Airtel, Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, Infosys, HDFC Bank were among the laggards. Among Asian peers, Tokyo and Shanghai were quoting in the positive territory while Hong Kong traded lower.​

Indian stock markets which opened in the green in the morning trade, fell sharply after the central bank’s rate setting committee decided to keep repo rates unchanged and remain focussed on ‘withdrawal of accommodation’. ​​Almost all sectoral indices are trading in the red, with the exception of Nifty PSU which was up 2.29% and Nifty Media which is up 1.64%.

Indian stock indices were marginally higher at Wednesday's opening bell, tracking positive cues from overnight US markets and buying in shares of State Bank of India and Reliance Industries. Foreign portfolio investors have again started accumulating Indian stocks this month. Going ahead into this week, investors will keep track of the outcome of the three-day RBI monetary policy meeting on Thursday.

Chinese stocks staged their biggest rally in years on Tuesday, after the country's sovereign wealth fund said it would step up buying shares as officials scramble to draw a line under a three-year market rout, a media report said. The Shanghai Composite, mainland China's benchmark index for large state-owned companies and blue-chip stocks, ended up 3.2 per cent on Tuesday, ending a six-day losing streak. It marks the biggest daily increase since March 2022, CNN reported.

Shares of BLS E-Services Ltd listed with a huge premium of nearly 129% against the issue price of Rs 135. The stock made its debut at Rs 309, climbing 128.88% from the issue price on the BSE. It further zoomed 157.70% to Rs 347.90.

Equity benchmark indices, the Nifty and the Sensex, climbed in early trade on Tuesday amid buying in IT majors, mainly Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys along with fresh foreign fund inflows. Among the Sensex firms, Tata Consultancy Services, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, Wipro, Maruti, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever and Mahindra & Mahindra were the major gainers.

Benchmark equity indices, the Nifty and the Sensex, bounced back sharply in Friday trade tracking a rally in global markets and taking the fiscal deficit target in the Interim Budget 2024 positively. BPCL, Power Grid, Adani Ports, Reliance, Infosys are some of the major gainers at noon. Market watchers expect the market to consolidate from here on in near-term.​

India’s Interim Budget 2024 did not enthuse the stock markets on Thursday, even as the finance minister increased FY25’s capital outlay by 11.1% to ₹11.11 lakh crore. The benchmark indices traded flat for the most of the session. Sensex fell by 100 points and Nifty by 28 points as they did not find any cues for upward march. Almost all the sectoral indices closed in the red except banks, especially PSU banks. Bond markets cheered and their yields came down sharply as FM set the fiscal deficit of FY25 at 5.1% of GDP.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Interim Budget for 2024 before the country heads for general elections later this year. The FY25 fiscal deficit target of 5.1% versus the revised estimate of 5.8% for FY24, has been welcomed by market watchers. Moreover, the FY25 capex outlay has been increased by 11.1% to ₹11.11 lakh crore which has enthused participants.

Benchmark equity indices, the Nifty and the Sensex, climbed nearly 1% on Wednesday on buying in HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries. Investors are keenly eyeing the two important events lined up -- the interim budget and the US Fed interest rate decision -- to derive further cues.

Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels on Wednesday said it has set a price band between Rs 147 and Rs 155 per equity share for its initial public offering (IPO). The company, through its IPO, aims at raising Rs 920 crore comprising Rs 600 crore through a fresh share sale and Rs 320 crore through an offer for sale, it said. The issue is scheduled to be active from February 5 to February 7.

Capital markets regulator Sebi has returned the draft IPO papers of Gretex Share Broking, a move that might delay the company's initial share sale. The proposed IPO is a combination of a fresh issue of 1.67 crore equity shares and an offer-for-sale (OFS) component of 30.96 lakh shares by selling shareholders. Earlier this month, the markets watchdog returned the IPO papers of Stallion India Fluorochemicals.

The Sensex observed a dip of 169.18 points, initiating the day at 70,891.13, while the Nifty recorded a decline of 40.40 points, starting at 21,413.55. The early market activity reflected the prevailing uncertainties in the global economic landscape.

Indian stocks were in the green Wednesday morning, after a bloodbath during the previous session -- Sensex fell over 1,000 points -- due to a host of reasons including high valuations, foreign portfolio investors lately pulling out funds from India, and a mild profit booking. Hindalco, IndusInd, Dr Reddys, SBI, and Coal India were the top five gainers.​​

The Indian stock market has pipped Hong Kong to become the fourth-highest equity market globally, Bloomberg reported. The combined value of shares listed on Indian exchanges reached USD 4.33 trillion as of Monday's close.

Quarterly earnings, global trends and trading activity of foreign investors will drive stock markets in this holiday-shortened week, analysts said. It will be a trading holiday on January 22, with the Maharashtra government announcing a holiday in connection with the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Foreign investors have adopted a cautious approach this month in the Indian markets, offloading domestic equities worth Rs 13,000 crore in the first three weeks of January 2024. They pulled out over Rs 24,000 crore from equities during January 17-19. Before this, FPIs made a net investment of Rs 66,134 crore in December and Rs 9,000 crore in November.

Stock exchanges will observe Trading Holiday on January 22 in Equity, Equity Derivatives, SLB Segment. Also, BSE and NSE will conduct a special trading session in the equity and equity derivative segment on Saturday to check their preparedness to handle major disruption or failure at the primary site.
