The FTSE ended the week on a high

The FTSE 100 rose today 0.41%, or 27 points to hit 6696.28.

Overall the U.K.'s main share index closes the week on a high, despite a dip earlier on.

Carnival's shares climbed by as much as 5.7%, after its competitor Royal Caribbean increased its annual profit forecast.

ITV also rose 3.5% after US cable giant Liberty Global, which owns Virgin Media in the UK, increased its stake to 9.9%. Liberty expressly denied it was planning a takeover bid, but Liberum's media analyst Ian Whittaker says: "Liberty has stated officially it has no intention of making a bid but its move suggests it thinks a bid may be coming at some point and it wants influence."

Fallers in the FTSE today included miners Antofagasta, which fell 2%, and Glencore, down 1.4%. Both fell on concerns that the slowdown in China and commodity price slump will continue to hit profits.
