The British population would turn to Queen Elizabeth II to take charge in a time of national crisis rather than elected government officials, according to a poll conducted by YouGov.

The recently-published survey reveals that 28% of Britons surveyed would trust the Queen to restore the country to stability during a period of "extreme disruption."

This is compared to 25% of respondents who said they would rather Parliament remained in power.

Just 9% of respondents said they'd turn to Britain's highest ranked military officer, currently General Sir Nicholas Houghton, Chief of the Defence Staff of the British Armed Forces.

The research defined "extreme disruption" as a time of "political corruption or dysfunctionality" and was based on the responses of nearly 2,500 adults.

And 30% of those responding to the survey said they did not know who they would prefer to take charge in such circumstances.
