Denver architect William Lang designed the castle in 1889, per Realtor.com. Lang constructed the fortified castle with 22-inch thick lava stones.

The current owners of the house bought the castle for $1.58 million in 2019, listing agent Jennifer Black of Usaj Realty told Realtor.com. They bought it just before COVID-19 and spent the pandemic renovating the entire house, Black added.

The current listing price is a 122.2% increase from its 2019 sale price, according to Zillow.

When reached for comment, listing agent Black pointed Insider to the property listing for details.

The US National Register of Historic Places states on its website that a place must be "worthy of preservation" to be added to the list.

The castle was once a popular bed and breakfast called Castle Marn Inn, according to the real-estate website Old Houses. Castle Marne Inn closed its doors in June 2020, per a post on the inn's Facebook page.

Lang was known for his usage of turrets in his architectural design, Black said in the video tour: "The architect had an amazing ability to create these spaces that are circular, with windows on all sides."

One of the features Black said she loved about the fireplace was the green man — a face carved into the fireplace.

According to the castle's listing, the green man symbolizes spring and rebirth in different cultures. Carvings of the green man can usually be found in European churches and cathedrals.

"The glass was made in Belgium just before WWI," Black said in the video. "This window is known in the neighborhood as one of those stand-out features that really symbolize the castle."

Denver-based stained-glass master Clarence Watkins created the stained window, per the listing. Watkins infused gold into the glass to create the pink and gold shades.

The castle has eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and seven parking spaces.

The bedrooms on the second floor are color-themed with blue and yellow rooms, Black said in the video. Pictures of the third-floor bedrooms show a more neutral palette.

Black said that when Lang first built the castle, the third floor was used as a ballroom.
