Photos show the Tokyo Games come to a close as crowds in Paris celebrate the 2024 Olympics

The closing ceremony for the Tokyo Games took place Sunday at the Olympic Stadium, which remained nearly empty as spectators were barred from attending the Games.

The all-women Takarazuka Revue musical theater troupe performed Japan's national anthem.

Each country had a representative carry its national flag into the Olympic stadium. American javelin thrower Kara Winger was Team USA's flag bearer.

Japanese superstar Milet sang "Hymne à l'amour," while an interpretive dance was performed by Japan's indigenous people, the Ainu.

The Olympic marathon runners received their medals at the closing ceremony. Molly Seidel of Team USA won bronze.

Tokyo's Governor Yuriko Koike passed the Olympic flag to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, marking the official transfer of responsibilities as Paris will host the Olympics in 2024.

In Paris, people gathered near the Eiffel Tower to "embrace their role as hosts of the Games," according to the official Olympics website.

Fighter jets flew overhead crowds in Paris and left trails of France's colors in the sky.

French Olympic medalists arrived at the handover ceremony and were cheered on by the crowd.

One woman was hoisted into the air in a possible nod to cheerleading, an official Olympic sport added to the 2024 games. Breakdancers appeared on stage during Paris' handover ceremony, as the event will also be added to the upcoming games.

In 2024, beach volleyball events will be held opposite the Eiffel Tower on the Champs de Mars. Football matches will occur in the Parc des Princes, and equestrian events will happen at the Palace of Versailles.

Thomas Bach, the ninth and current president of the International Olympic Committee, told athletes in Tokyo that they gave millions of people hope during the pandemic. "For the first time since the pandemic began, the entire world came together," Bach said.
