These 10 nations faced coup and some failed like Turkey

A failed military coup in Turkey, which ended with turmoil and violence, left around 290 dead and over 1,400 injured. Around 6,000 people were detained as forces loyal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan foiled the coup, which began on Friday night.

The coup started in Turkey on Friday night when tanks entered Ankara and Istanbul and soldiers blocked the famous Bosphorus Bridge connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul.

Around 300 people had gathered in Istanbul's Taksim Square, waving Turkish flags. Even the social media was blocked and Turkey Blocks, a group that tracks censorship in Turkey, said all three services were blocked in the country.

On that night itself, a faction of the military issued a declaration and stated that political administration had lost all legitimacy.

In the wee hours of Saturday, Erdogan addressed the nation via FaceTime and urged people to take to streets to stand up against the military faction.

"Go to the streets and give them their answer. Those who are responsible, we will give them the necessary punishment," Erdogan had said.

Throughout the night, gunshots were heard in Ankara and as per reports, crowds marched through the streets.

Meanwhile, there were also reports of bombs thrown outside the parliament building in Ankara.

Later, Erdogan landed at Istanbul's airport and Turkey's deputy Prime Minister, Mehmet Simsek, said the government was in full control after a failed coup attempt.

Turkey isn’t alone in this club. In recent times, many countries faced coup attempts and some were successful too. The last successful coup was in Yemen in 2014-15, which led to the Yemenese Civil War.
