This school student from Odisha has used old note of Rs 500 to generate electricity

If you haven’t yet deposited old Rs 500 note and wondering what to do with it, just relax. You can soon use it to generate electricity and lighten up you home on Christmas. Lachman Dundi from Odisha has just done so.

An intermediate science student at Khariar College in Nuapada district of Odisha, Lachman has used the silicon of the notes to create energy. He has exposed the notes to direct sunlight and that’s how silicon produces electricity.

This is a proven theory in science. According to why-sci.com, silicon is a semiconductor. When sunlight strikes the cell, the cell absorbs some of the energy of the light. This influx of energy knocks loose electrons from the silicon atoms, allowing them to move freely. Photovoltaic cells also contain one or more electric fields that force free-flowing electrons to flow in a specific direction in order to generate an electric current.

And that’s what Lachman has done. The exposure of silicon circuit to sunlight produces 5 volts of electricity. He has created a transformer with electric wire that can save the charge from silicon.

If stored in battery, this can generate power for 24 hours, claims Lachman. Son of labourers manages expenses of studies by selling bulbs at local market.
An inquisitive learner of science, Lachman thanks his teacher Pravat Kumar Parija, who taught him about this theory. After demonetization he thought of making use of Rs 500 note that was scrapped of circulation.
