Donald Trump blamed the US media for stoking "anger and rage" in the US after two mass shootings left 29 people dead on Sunday.

In a tweet on Monday Trump wrote: "The Media has a big responsibility to life and safety in our Country. Fake News has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years."

"News coverage has got to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these terrible problems will only get worse!"

Communities in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, were rocked on Sunday by two shootings, which left a total 29 people dead.

Blame for Sunday's tragedies has more often been places on Trump's anti-immigrant standpoint, with Pete Buttigieg saying on Sunday that it makes white nationalists "feel validated."

Shortly before a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, an anti-immigrant document was posted to the online message board 8chan which promised "a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."

A Justice Department official said on Sunday that officials are treating the El Paso shooting as a "domestic terrorist" case.

In a previous tweet on Monday morning Trump said Congress should link new gun control legislation with immigration reform.

"We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!" he said.
