Trump campaign trolls Bill Clinton: 'Our best surrogate. We're thinking of having him in the spin room'
Donald Trump's campaign manager mocked former President Bill Clinton on Wednesday morning for his recent criticism of President Barack Obama's signature health care law.
Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway sarcastically praised Clinton on "Morning Joe" for his comments that the Affordable Care Act is an effective law, yet "needs to be fixed."
"We've got now President Bill Clinton is our best surrogate," Conway said, smiling. "We're thinking of having him in the spin room with us."
On Monday, the former president called Obamacare "the craziest thing in the world" and said the people "getting killed in this deal are small business people and individuals who make just a little too much to get any of these subsidies."
Clinton tried on Tuesday to clarify his comments, praising the law, but noting its flaws.
"There is a big problem with it that needs to be fixed," Clinton said at a Tuesday event. "That everybody knows admits it. If you're just above a line to qualify for the Medicaid expansion, or just above the line to qualify for the subsidies for workers, the likelihood is your premiums have gone up, your coverage has gone down, and the insurance companies have taken the power."
Trump reacted on Twitter soon after, writing: "Wow, did you hear Bill Clinton's statement on how bad Obamacare is? Hillary not happy. As I have been saying, REPEAL AND REPLACE!"
Conway said during Wednesday's interview that Trump would replace the ACA with health savings accounts and other policies that would allow individuals to purchase healthcare across state lines. Both proposals are widely popular among Republican lawmakers, but likely would not allow as many Americans to have access to healthcare.
For her part, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has pledged to "defend and expand" the ACA, advocating to make it easier to buy into medicare, and calling for initiatives to fight the rising cost of some prescription drugs.
