Electronics For Imaging (EFI), a California-based company in the US, has been fined for paying eight Indian employees Rs 75 an hour. The minimum pay in the US is $7.25 (Rs 443) per hour.

The Indian workers had to work 120 hours a week and were not even paid overtime. According to US labour law, it’s mandatory to pay overtime if employees put in more than 40 hours in a week.

The 25-year old company said, "we unintentionally overlooked laws that require even foreign employees to be paid based on local US standards." The US Department of Labor labelled the incident as "outrageous and unacceptable." It also imposed a penalty of $3,500 on the company. Moreover, the company has also been asked to pay about $43,000 as arrears in wages.
