Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer announced on Sunday that he will retire at the end of the year. While coaching changes are common in college football, they are not at Virginia Tech.

We recently looked at how 72% of college football seniors are playing for a different coach than the one who recruited them six years earlier. But lost in the discussion of the ever-increasing amount of turnover was Beamer, the lone data point on the far right of the chart, a rare force of stability in the volatile world of college football.

Once Beamer steps down, the title of "longest-tenured FBS coach" will be shared by Kirk Ferentz of Iowa and Bob Stoops of Oklahoma. Maybe not ironically, they both served as assistant coaches under Hayden Fry, who coached at Iowa for 20 years.
