Demonetisation scheme made old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 invalid in the entire nation and Prime Minister Narendra Modi allowed acceptance of the old notes at public utilities till November 24. Hence, today is the last day to spend your old currency notes as after today, they can only be exchanged or deposited in banks till December 31.
Public utilities were asked to accept the invalid denominations till Nov 24 and since then, the list expanded from Mother Dairy and other government milk booths, government hospitals, railway ticketing and crematoria and burial grounds to metro rail tickets, highway toll, medicine prescribed by a doctor, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and entry tickets of ASI monuments.
But the money crunch and long queues at banks forced the government to extend the deadline further till November 24th. Since the banks are still struggling to dispense old notes and the queues haven't vanished, the government is expected to extend the deadline once again.
If not you can still use your old notes at Government hospitals, Railway tickets, Public transport, Airline tickets at airports, Milk booths, Crematoria/burial grounds, Petrol pumps, Metro rail tickets, Medicine prescribed by a doctor, LPG gas cylinders, Railway catering, Power and water bills, Entry tickets of ASI monument, Consumer cooperative stores, Taxes and penalties to government bodies Court fees, Seeds at state-owned outlets
