Fewer potatoes on your plates this year

Potatoes, probably the most bought vegetable in India, would be costlier this year as the potato prices are likely to go up this year. This has happened because of an expected drop in output which in turn is the result of unfavourable weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, top two states producing potatoes. As per reports from a potato growers' association, West Bengal production is expected to be 13.6% less than last year, while in UP, it is expected to be less by 10%.
It is high time that Indian farmers get a way out to battle the changes in weather patterns, particularly rainfall. Local governments and research institutes must help farmers come up with ways to be sure of appropriate crops even as the weather goes against their luck.
