Voter turnout further declines in Phase 4 of polling as 70% of Indians finish voting

• A provisional voter turnout of 64% was recorded in the phase four of India’s general elections.
• Polling was held across 1.46 lakh polling stations in 71 parliamentary constituencies of India.

As the phase four of polling for India’s general elections came to an end, a provisional voter turnout of 64% was recorded, according to the Election Commission.

Overall, the voter turnout further reduced in the phase 4 from 64.33% in phase 3.

Elections in phase four were held across 1.46 lakh polling stations in 71 parliamentary constituencies of India. 11.9 crore voters were eligible to vote of which women voters were 5.7 crores.

The polling on April 29 also marked the end of polling for Assembly elections in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. 70% of India concludes voting today.


In the phase 4 of polling, the financial capital of the country – Mumbai – went to polls. The day witnessed the who’s who of Bollywood step out to vote, along with the industrialists of the city.

But the day was also not one of devoid controversies.

Violence erupted in the polling station at Asansol in West Bengal. Reportedly, TMC and BJP workers got into a clash. BJP MP Babul Supriyo’s car was also vandalised during the clash.

The Election Commission has registered a case against Supriyo, who was also reported to have had a heated argument with polling officials, for having forcibly entered a polling booth.

The provisional voter turnout in UP was recorded at 58.46%, Maharashtra registered a voter turnout of 55.86%, while West Bengal had the highest voter turnout at 76.66%.

The phase 5 of the polling will be held on May 6.
