  • A self-driving van from Waymo - the autonomous car company that started as a Google project - was involved in a car crash in Chandler, Arizona.
  • The vehicle was struck by a Honda sedan, which swerved into the Waymo vehicle's lane, according to news reports.
  • The Waymo vehicle was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, say authorities. However, it was manned by operator, who sustained minor injuries, according to officials.

A self-driving van operated by Waymo - a cousin company to Google under the corporate umbrella of Alphabet - was involved in a crash on Friday in Chandler, Arizona.

According to Fox 10 Phoenix, a Honda sedan traveling the opposite direction swerved and struck the Waymo vehicle. Police are investigating the accident, per that report.

While the van was reportedly operating in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, it reportedly had an operator sitting in the driver's seat. The Waymo operator sustained only minor injuries, according to reports. The report does not indicate whether there were any injuries sustained by the occupants of the Honda sedan.

This isn't the first self-driving car accident for Waymo. However, in only one incident so far was a Waymo vehicle said to be at fault: A Waymo vehicle was traveling at 2 miles per hour in Mountain View, California, when it hit the side of a public bus. However, this accident comes not long after an Uber self-driving car infamously struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona.
