Amazon is not doing a $99 Kindle Fire HD tablet, a company spokesperson tells us: "It's not happening--we are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware."

Previously, TechCrunch had passed along a rumor that Amazon was going to release a $99 tablet, which would have been extremely disruptive.

It looks like that's just not feasible right now for Amazon.

On the other hand, some people are picking apart the wording of Amazon's statement, which says "that hardware," meaning it's still possible there will be a new version of the Kindle Fire that costs $99.

TechCrunch appears to be sticking by its report on the $99 Kindle Fire HD despite Amazon's statement.
