Dominic Thiem smashed a fan's phone out of their hands with a wayward shot at the Rogers Cup

  • Dominic Thiem smashed a fan's phone from their hands with a wayward shot just before his Rogers Cup (or Canadian Open) win over Marin Cilic on Thursday.
  • The Frenchman beat Cilic 7-6 (7), 6-4 in Montreal to book his place in the quarterfinals, where he will face Daniil Medvedev on Friday.
  • Thiem has never made it to this stage in the Canadian Open before, having only ever reached as far as the second round in each of his last five attempts.

Dominic Thiem smashed a fan's phone from their hands with a woeful shot just before he progressed to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open (Rogers Cup) with a hard fought victory over Marin Cilic.

Second seed Thiem edged past the Croatian 7-6 (7), 6-4 in Montreal on Thursday to book his place in the last eight, where he will face Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Thiem smashed an impressive 11 aces past Cilic, as well as saving nine break points during the one hour and 53 minute match.

But while his eye was certainly in for the most part, the Frenchman did miss the mark a few times - most notably when his wayward overhand shot propelled directly into the phone of a fan in the front row during practice.

Front row seats behind the server at the Canadian Open can cost upwards of $600. Add in to that the cost of a brand new phone, and it was likely to have turned into an expensive day out for this poor fan.

Thiem takes on eighth seed Medvedev on Friday as he looks to book a place in the semifinals at the Rogers Cup for the first time in his career.
