The number of Black students in MBA programs hasn't increased for more than a decade
Students graduate from Harvard Business School. For the past 30 years, only about 5% of each of Harvard's MBA classes have been Black.Harvard Business School/Facebook
  • Black Americans comprise under 10% of students in MBA programs on average, and that number hasn't grown over the past decade.
  • Universities haven't done enough to recruit Black students, who often have smaller professional networks, and also are disproportionately affected by high tuition costs and a lack of diversity among faculty, admissions experts told The Wall Street Journal.
  • Harvard Business School Dean Nitin Nohria wrote in an open letter to the HBS community published June 7 that his own program's efforts to recruit Black students were "painfully insufficient."
  • Many top executives use MBAs to launch their careers, and business schools' diversity problems could be contributing to the lack of diversity in American C-suites, too.
