The 'hijab Barbie' gives the world's most popular doll a modest makeover

So far, the 'Hijarbie' Instagram features Barbie in 20 different Muslim outfits, like this bright yellow ensemble.

Adam came up with the idea a few months ago, after looking at the popular Barbie Style Instagram. She felt dissatisfied there wasn't a doll that dressed like her, she told Al Jazeera.

So she decided to do something about it, and designed floral hijabs and handpainted abayas for Barbie...

...and 'Hijarbie' was born.

Adam's Instagram has garnered more than 38,000 followers since December. "I was a little bit surprised by its success, but then, most people haven't seen something like that before," she said.

Adam also plans to launch a modest lifestyle brand called Hanie. Her designs are inspired by popular Muslim fashion bloggers, such as like Habiba Da Silva and Leena Asad.

The world of Muslim fashion seems to be on the upswing, and more retailers are taking note.

Dolce & Gabbana recently announced a couture hijab collection. Other designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Oscar de la Renta, and Monique Lhuillier have produced hijab lines in the last few years.

Modest fashion is becoming a more powerful industry than ever before. Muslims spent about $266 billion on clothing in 2013, Fortune reports. That number is expected to double by 2019.

"The hijab is actually more about modesty than fashion but who says you can't incorporate both together? Fashion with faith," Adam said.
